On the basis of talent and tournament dominance, the Fairdale team that won back-to-back titles in 1990 and '91 with Jermaine Brown, Maurice Morris and Carlos Turner stands out. Of course, Lexington Catholic in 2002 and Jeffersontown in 2006 pretty much spent four days kicking tail, so you can't overlook them. And I think the 1996 Paintsville team deserves special mention in this category, because it was about as stacked as a small-town team can be.

Well said. It's always an enjoyable experience, either in the uppers, the lowers or on the press row (you would know better than me). Who would you say was the best team in your 25 years of covering the event?

Of course South Laurel, who won it all in 2005, played on Saturday morning, but I was curious as to when the last "current" 12th Region played in the state semifinals.

The most recent are as follows:

1989: Wayne County (state runner-up)
1986: Pulaski County (state champ)
1982: Laurel County (state champ)
1965: Hazel Green (state semifinalist)
1960: Monticello (state runner-up)

As you can tell, it's pretty rare for a local bunch to be playing in the state final four. The draw sets up for a potential run by Lincoln County or McCreary Central, but as always, it will be tough.

Nice work on the blog all season. You're predictions for the opening round were very fair. I don't think anyone expected Garrard County to pick up a win in Monticello, especially after the issues at school over the last couple of weeks.

While it is fun to look back at predictions from earlier, they must always be taken with a grain of salt. No one really has a clue what type of team a school will field. Lincoln County has definitely been a surprise, but then so has Mercer County. The Titans just never seemed to get off the ground. They were as good on opening night as closing night - and that ain't a good thing!

Lincoln County, on the other hand, has to be one of the bigger shocks this area has seen in a while. I'm not necessarily surprised that they had a nice season because Larry French can flat out coach, but no one would have expected the Patriots to finish 8-2 and be on the top five teams in Class 5A. Its too bad they have to travel to Highlands (assuming wins over Pulaski and Montgomery/Johnson Central), but no matter what happens French has to be coach of the year.

As for the second round, the odds suggest a 50% drop-off in area teams. Danville will have their hands full with Bardstown, but I think the Ads advance; Lincoln should be able to move on as well. Boyle will give Catholic a good game (the Rebels have made big strides this year), but I can't see this Boyle County team winning on Clays Mill. And finally, I would love to see the Golden Lions win down at Somerset. The Jumpers laid the wood to Garrard back in September (65-20) and it will take a herculean effort to reverse that this week. I'm rootin' hard for GC but the Jumpers should pick up the win.

I am Andrew's mom and I have so appreciated your coverage of the Titans golf season, this year as well as in the past. I can tell you have come to know and appreciate the talent on this team and have gotten to know the personalities of some of the players. It was heartbreaking for Andrew and us to have missed the cut but as you say he will be okay. I cannot say enough about the integrity of him as a person in showing so much support for his good friend Ward Dedman. To be able to show up in Bowling Green and not be able to play shows that he is a young man of strength and loyalty. Thank you for all your kind words and support through the years. Keep up the good work!!!

Remember the Danville-Madison Central was the one I picked as my upset special in our preseason preview. As for week 3, those scheduling decisions are still a few days away. Whether I'm there in person or in spirit, I'll be pulling for my alma mater, even though I don't know a living soul on the field for the Generals, whether coach or player. Jackson got its second season started with a win over Powell County, and while they're moving way, way up in class to play Garrard in their first-ever district game, things are progressing well there for such a young program.

Good week of picks. I don't think anyone saw the handling Madison Central put on Danville coming, but otherwise you did a nice job.

Here's my question, and it actually covers week 3, not this upcoming week: With Danville/Boyle and Mercer/Lincoln both being played on September 7, will you make the trip to Lancaster to see your Jackson County Generals take on the Golden Lions?

Its been a while since I have had the chance to see the blog. It is great! I love the local coverage. Just for those scoring at home....Nick Winkler, Derrick Henderson, and Jamie Grey along with Ross won the state championship in the 4x400. I look forward to following the blog in the fall.
